Artist statement
Melt Into You is about a partner’s embrace, and what a long hug does to whatever you were carrying. Each piece is a tall black field with one, two or three boxes of colour on it. Inside each box sits a stack of sixty rings, one colour of the palette each, and when you open the piece the rings are shaking. Over the next few seconds they settle. Fine lines run across the field the whole time, following a current that only that piece has.
I write the code, and the code makes the pieces. The program is the same for all of them. What changes is a number, a sixty-four digit hash that the blockchain hands the piece when it is minted, and everything else follows from that: the palette, how many boxes, whether they stand or lie, how large the rings are, how thick the lines run, how fast, and whether they are allowed past the edge of the box.
The boxes are the point. A tight one, with the lines held inside it, is what it feels like under tension, holding everything in. The ones that bleed over, with the lines running out across the field, are the same person let go of. The melting is the hug. So when you look at the series, look for pairs: two pieces in the same colour, one tense and one loose.
The melt only happens live. There is no still image in the code; there is a piece that runs, and it settles in front of whoever opened it, from the same number, the same way, every time. The version of the program on this site is the one written to the chain in July 2023, unchanged, and every minted token here is drawn by it. The difficult part was never one good piece. It was writing a program that only makes good ones, since once it was on the chain there was no going back to fix the four-hundredth.
